Why Every Farming Family Needs a Succession Plan

For many farming families, the farm is much more than a business. It is a home, a livelihood and often a legacy that has been built over generations. Yet despite the importance of preserving that legacy, succession planning is often delayed because the conversations can be difficult.


Many families assume that succession planning is simply about deciding who receives the farm under a Will. In reality, effective succession planning involves much more. It requires consideration of ownership structures, business operations, retirement needs, taxation consequences and the expectations of family members both on and off the farm.


One of the biggest risks of failing to plan is uncertainty. If there is no clear plan in place, misunderstandings can develop between siblings, family relationships can become strained, and the future of the farming enterprise may be placed at risk.


A well-structured succession plan allows families to have important discussions while everyone is able to participate in the decision-making process. It provides an opportunity to consider how the farm can remain viable, how retiring generations will be supported, and how family members who are not involved in the farming business may be treated fairly.


Importantly, fair does not always mean equal. Every family is different, and succession plans should reflect the unique circumstances of the people involved.

The most successful succession plans are usually those that commence well before retirement becomes imminent. Early planning provides flexibility and allows changes to be implemented gradually rather than in response to a crisis.


While these conversations are not always easy, avoiding them rarely makes the situation simpler. A thoughtful succession plan can provide certainty, protect family relationships and help ensure the farm remains productive for future generations.
